What the chip does
A transponder key has a small chip in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the car reads the chip. If the code doesn’t match, the engine won’t start, even though the key turns the ignition. That’s the point of the chip: the car only starts for a key it knows.
That’s why a key that was only cut can open the door and still leave you stuck. The car needs the chip programmed to it. We cut the key and program the chip in the same visit.
When you need one

The chip is programmed so the car accepts it. We test the key in the door and the ignition and start the car.
Questions
How do I know if my key has a chip?
If your car is from the late 90s on, it very likely does. Call with the year, make and model and we'll confirm.
Can't I just get a copy cut?
A key that has only been cut may fit the lock, but a car with an immobilizer won't start unless the chip is programmed. We do both the cutting and the programming.
Do you come to me?
Yes. We cut and program the key at your car anywhere in the Santa Clarita Valley. Outside it there's a flat +$75 travel charge, quoted on the phone with everything else before we dispatch.
